Alan Wilson got a pleasant surprise in Miami last week. As the managing director of a long-established tour operator specialising in US holidays, he is a regular visitor to the city's trendy South Beach resort, and is accustomed to offhand treatment from waiters and hotel staff more interested in posing than serving.
This time was different. "Try to get a drink at somewhere like the Sagamore and, in the past, if you weren't one of the beautiful people you were shunned," he said. "Now they've lowered their criteria. They want even the likes of fortysomething me.".........
